Is Short-form Content the New Norm?

What’s up guys.

I’ve been testing out my responses with my clients, my IG page and my website on which sort of content has been garnering the best response.

What I found was most effective in garnering the best response in 2024 was short form content that appealed to people’s need for easy consumption & laziness.

I always was a proponent for long-form content which offered detail, jam-packed with value and strong call to actions. But in terms of traffic and marketing to a cold audience. Generic, short- evergreen content will be best.

I think this is because people’s attention spans have been getting worst and worst lately. In addition to the overabundance of content out there. There’s an art in creating short-form content.

Well first of all, short-form content is easy to create. Long-form content on the other hand is much harder to create, plan and launch. However, on the other hand, with short-form content you need to have more volume because the quality will not be there.

Rules of short form content

#1 Keep things short

#2 Don’t overcomplicate topics

#3 Simplify

#4 Produce a lot

#5 Attention grabbing

Let’s go through each step one by one:

Keep things short

You want to keep things short because people nowadays do not have the attention span, nor the focus to watch long videos. If you’re a nobody in someone’s eyes – short form content is the best way to start

Don’t overcomplicate topics

If you think about things logically, ANY niche’s depth is infinite. You can spend a LIFETIME learning about a certain topic and it will still not be enough. So don’t try to give people everything, you won’t be able to do it. Say what needs to be said, in a shortened vesion.

Simplify

Similair as above, cut things down. Be ruthless in making things neat and compact.

Produce a lot

ONE short form content is not enough to garner a following. You need a series of short form content to create an audience.

Attention grabbing

Finally, master the art of grabbing attention. Your content must be weird, funny, unique and all in all be able to grab people’s attention. Don’t be boring.

What’s up with short-form content 2024?

Since 2020, the most popular form of video content has been in the form of shorts, reels and short form social media posts. This is what the algorithm favors which is an indicator of what other people are favoring.

However, I want to give you an insight that most digital agencies won’t give you and that’s trends change. Short form content today may be in abundance but perhaps when people get bored of short-form, then expect to see long-form content to become popular again.

This is because an overabundance of anything, will create too much of a supply and thus the opposite (long-form) will be in demand. As you can see on YOUTUBE, long-form is still very much active in the form of podcasting – guys like Valuetainment, Joe Rogan, Mind valley do it best..

Detailed long-form content has its place. Short form content has its place. It depends on your digital marketing strategy and what you want to achieve.

The most important factor in organic traffic generation will always be value, there are bad examples of long-form content and there are also bad examples of short-form content. Short-form content needs to be compact, jam-packed with value that’s said in as little words as possible.

There’s an art in doing this, practice and being in the game is what will get you the results you want.
